New Work — Finished novels, brought into English one at a time — the two at the front of the shelf, and what stands behind them.
The novels on this page are not being invented. They exist — finished, their endings known, written by a novelist with three published books behind him and a lifetime of stories besides. What is happening now, in New Jersey, is their passage into English: a body of work brought over one book at a time.
Where the Honey Was is a novel about memory and evidence — about a man who reports, in convincing detail, a week he never lived, and a wife who writes it all down in two columns and refuses to decide which column is true. The Land Between Us, complete and waiting its turn, is a novel about land and guilt on a Brazilian frontier in 1981, where everything comes to a head in a single week.
The order is set: the English text of Where the Honey Was by the end of 2026, then The Land Between Us. Behind them stands the rest of the work — novels and stories written over the years, to be revisited and set in English in their turn.
Where the Honey Was — Complete novel · English text under way, expected end of 2026
New Jersey, July 2025. Paolo Tosi, seventy-five, a retired professor of architecture, is slipping — into the last week of July 1944, into a village in the Italian hills, into the life of his uncle Vittorio, a young Nembo officer with seven days to live.
His wife Laura keeps the notebook: two columns, the explainable and the unexplainable. A diagnosis could fill the first column. It cannot explain how a man describes a house, a river, a punishment in a palazzo — things he never saw, in a week he never lived, that the records confirm.
The Land Between Us — Complete novel · next in line for English
Brazil, 1981. On the frontier of Mato Grosso, the fazendas are closing around the land of the Guaraní-Kaiowá, and in the town of Santa Esperança everything comes to a head in a single week — a delegado who has held his office ten years, his wife Helena, a prisoner remembering the road that brought him to a cell, and Lidia, carrying a wound from a convent school that only an old woman’s memory can reach.
A finished novel, it waits its turn while Where the Honey Was takes its English form.
